How to Pray

Prayer is not a formula you memorize for a specific response from God, nor is it a magic spell where you string together various spiritual words. In the simplest terms, prayer is our way of communication with God. Prayer is also a discipline that we need to grow in. So how are we to learn how to pray correctly?

Before we look to any other guide, let’s take note of the examples of prayers found in Scripture. Below are a few examples from which we can learn how we should pray.

“Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.”

— Jesus Christ (Revelation 3:20)

Praying Through Scripture

Praying through Scripture is a biblical practice to help us pray with clarity and full assurance. This is modeled by the very authors of Scripture which you can find in many instances when the Old Testament is quoted in the New Testament writings. Praying through Scripture doesn’t mean we simply reciting the Bible like magic words. Rather, it is a practice of engaging with Scripture by allowing God’s truth to guide our prayers.
